Itinerary & tour plan

Your journey begins in Vila Nova de Milfontes, often referred to as the "Princess of the Alentejo". This coastal village offers a unique blend of sea and river landscapes, with golden beaches sheltered by cliffs and freshwater springs flowing from the mountains. Stroll through the heart of the village with its whitewashed houses and historic fortress. Discover the beauty of the Mira River and the scenic Praia das Furnas, where nature's artistry takes center stage. A perfect starting point for your adventure along the Costa Vicentina.

A comfortable transfer will take you to Porto Covo, a picturesque fishing village with narrow streets lined by whitewashed houses with colourful doors. Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, Porto Covo provides an ideal introduction to the spirit and landscapes of the Costa Vicentina. As you set out, the trail winds along a coastline dotted with secluded beaches and secluded coves, each with its own unique charm. The ever-changing scenery is a constant delight, shaped by the Atlantic Ocean and the rhythms of nature. The dunes come alive along the way with colour and fragrance, sheltering rare plant species found only on this stretch of the Portuguese coast. As you walk through this rich natural tapestry, you will feel the unique harmony between land and sea that defines this unforgettable coastal journey.

Take in sweeping views of Vila Nova de Milfontes and the tranquil waters of the Mira River where it gently meets the vast Atlantic Ocean. Cross the river by boat to enjoy beautiful views of the estuary, the village and the surrounding hills covered in Mediterranean vegetation, which is home to an abundance of berries, birds and small wildlife. As you continue your walk, the landscape quietly tells the story of human life along this coastline. From enduring artisanal fishing traditions to ancient flint mills hidden among the dunes, the traces of early settlements blend naturally into the scenery, creating a strong sense of connection between people and place. Upon reaching Almograve, a village nestled between dramatic cliffs and expansive sandy beaches, you are invited to slow down and embrace the laid-back rhythm of the Alentejo coast, where nature and time appear to move at a gentler pace.

Embark on the renowned Fishermen's Trail, leading to Zambujeira do Mar, a locale characterised by its striking landscapes and profound sense of place. The route winds through wild beaches, red dunes and small fishing harbours, each offering a unique perspective on the coast's raw and untamed beauty. One of the day’s highlights is Cabo Sardão, where towering cliffs rise above the Atlantic and offer unforgettable ocean vistas. En route, opportunities to connect with local life and traditions enrich the experience, breathing life into the spirit of the coast. Upon arrival in Zambujeira do Mar, you will be welcomed by sweeping sea views and cliff-top beaches. The small Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar, nestled in a tranquil square, adds a serene and authentic touch to this picturesque coastal village.

Today’s journey will take you across rolling hills and gentle slopes, revealing some of the most stunning beaches along Portugal’s south-west coast. As you travel, you will discover a series of stunning beaches, including Alteirinhos, Carvalhal, Machados and the iconic Praia de Amália, which was named in honour of Portugal’s legendary fado singer. Each beach has its own unique atmosphere and natural beauty. Your final destination is Odeceixe, home to one of Portugal's Seven Natural Wonders. Here, where the river meets the sea, you will find a beach that feels both wild and serene. The village itself has a timeless rural charm with its whitewashed houses and narrow streets, which invite you to explore at a relaxed pace. Make a point of visiting the traditional Odeceixe Mill at Serro da Igreja, where you can see grain being milled using age-old techniques. You should also visit the Church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, a peaceful viewpoint overlooking the village and surrounding landscape, where you can pause and reflect at the end of the day.

As you leave the dramatic cliffs behind, the route turns inland, guiding you through the gentle countryside of the western Algarve, still within the protected landscapes of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. The scenery gradually changes, revealing rolling hills and green fields, offering a refreshing contrast to the wild coastline with its quieter rhythm. The journey then takes you to Aljezur, a town rich in history and surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Founded by the Moors in the 10th century, Aljezur preserves its cultural heritage through enduring traditions and historic landmarks. Perched above the town, the Castle of Aljezur stands as a powerful reminder of the past, offering visitors sweeping vistas of this timeless confluence of mountains, countryside, and distant sea.

The route back to the coast passes through fragrant valleys and small farms before reaching Monte do Clérigo Beach, where the landscape is dominated by views of the open sea. After crossing the Atalaia Bridge, you will come to the evocative ruins of the Ribat da Arrifana, Portugal’s only known monastic fortress. As the horizon widens, the trail leads you into Arrifana Bay, one of the true highlights of the western Algarve. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters, this striking location provides the perfect conclusion to a day shaped by history, nature, and the Atlantic coast.

At the end of the tour, a comfortable transfer to the airport will be arranged in line with your flight schedule, allowing you to relax and enjoy a smooth and worry-free departure.
