Itinerary & tour plan
Your adventure begins in Baiona, a charming coastal town in Galicia, Spain, after your transfer from Porto Airport. With its well-preserved historic centre, Baiona invites you to wander through narrow, cobbled streets where history meets the Atlantic Ocean. Be sure to take time to explore the impressive Monterreal Fortress, which offers breathtaking views over the bay — especially at sunset. Baiona is renowned for its fresh seafood and relaxed seaside atmosphere, making it the perfect place to settle in, meet your fellow travellers, and ease into the rhythm of your coastal cycling journey.
Experience the unique allure of the Rías Baixas region as you cycle along Spain’s Atlantic coast, surrounded by the lush foothills of the Sierra de la Grova and Sierra de Argalo mountains. The landscape unfolds at a relaxed pace, allowing you to enjoy the rhythm of the ride and the shared experiences with your fellow travellers. The route then takes you to O Rosal, one of the most renowned wine sub-regions of the Rías Baixas area and home to the celebrated Albariño grape. This is a land shaped by vineyards and tradition, where wine culture is deeply rooted in everyday life. A scenic ferry crossing over the River Minho marks your entry into Portugal, taking you to the charming town of Caminha. Stroll through streets lined with stately historic houses with roots stretching back to Roman times. Boasting medieval and Renaissance architecture, including the beautiful Church of the Mother of God, Caminha offers a peaceful setting where history, culture and the Atlantic meet in perfect harmony
The route hugs the coastline, gently alternating between seaside paths, rural landscapes and distant mountain views to create a varied and rewarding cycling experience. The beautiful scenery encourages you to slow down, enjoy the ride and share the experience with your fellow travellers. At the mouth of the river lies Viana do Castelo, a town that has been profoundly shaped by the sea and its maritime heritage spanning centuries. Known as the City of Navigators, Viana played an important role during the Age of Discovery, a legacy which is still visible today. Highlights include the Gil Eannes Hospital Ship, which is now a floating museum, as well as an architectural landscape that blends Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque influences and is crowned by the iconic Basilica of Santa Luzia. Viana is also at the heart of Minho folklore, where tradition is kept alive through colourful costumes, lively dances such as the vira and celebrations such as the Romaria da Senhora da Agonia. These events fill the town with music, devotion and the sparkle of traditional filigree jewellery.
Picture yourself cycling south and crossing the meaningful stretch of the Camino de Santiago that is the Sebastião Bridge over the Neiva River, adding a sense of journey and connection to the ride. If you want to take in even more of the scenery, you can take a short detour to the Belinho Panoramic Observation Tower, where you can enjoy sweeping views across farmland, coastal dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. The route then takes you through the protected landscapes of the Litoral Norte Natural Park, a pristine nature reserve shaped by river estuaries, wetlands and coastal ecosystems. The changing scenery here invites quiet contemplation and shared moments as you cycle through one of the region's most tranquil natural areas. The day gently comes to an end in Vila do Conde, a relaxed, timeless town. Take a stroll through the narrow streets lined with traditional houses, discover the local rendas de bilros (bobbin lace) craft and savour the region's flavours, including the beloved toucinho do céu, a classic conventual sweet.
The route starts in Vila do Conde and heads south along the coast. On the way, it passes a number of small fishing villages and the lively seaside town of Matosinhos, which is famous for its golden beach and seafood. This is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a relaxed group lunch, whether you choose freshly grilled fish or Portugal’s iconic bacalhau. The journey then continues alongside the Douro River, where the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the iconic Luís I Bridge of Porto comes into view. Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage city, captivates visitors with its unique blend of tradition and contemporary life. Wander through atmospheric streets, admire architectural landmarks, and of course visit the famous Port wine cellars, where the city’s centuries-old wine culture is brought to life.
As you leave the vibrant city of Porto behind, the route follows the Atlantic coast at a more relaxed pace. You will be accompanied by a refreshing sea breeze and the subtle scent of pine forests. Heading south, the journey takes you through charming seaside towns where the calm surroundings and open ocean views encourage you to slow down and enjoy the ride with the group. Your destination is Furadouro, a coastal village renowned for its expansive sandy beach and relaxed atmosphere. Popular for water sports, especially surfing, it is also renowned for its fresh seafood, with local restaurants serving delicious fish dishes. Be sure to try the famous Pão de Ló de Ovar, a light, traditional Portuguese sponge cake available in nearby bakeries. With its unhurried rhythm, natural scenery, and coastal charm, Furadouro offers a restful and welcoming stop along your cycling adventure.
The route takes you through the São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve, a protected landscape of moving sand dunes, uncommon plant species and a significant habitat for migratory birds. This unique area plays a vital role in the Ria de Aveiro ecosystem, offering visitors a tranquil and refreshing immersion in nature. A memorable moment along the journey is the scenic 15-minute ferry crossing to São Jacinto, connecting Aveiro, Gafanha and São Jacinto, with gentle views all around. Upon arrival at Praia da Barra, Portugal’s tallest lighthouse can be seen rising above the coast. If you're feeling adventurous, climbing to the top is rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the ocean and lagoon (open to visitors every Wednesday). Continuing south, the route passes through Costa Nova, instantly recognisable for its colourful striped houses lining the waterfront. The day comes to a peaceful close in Mira, a traditional fishing village renowned for its tranquil coastline and local craftsmanship, including handmade carpets and other traditional arts.
At the end of the tour, a comfortable transfer to the airport will be arranged in line with your flight schedule, allowing you to relax and enjoy a smooth and worry-free departure.
